Game 1 of the NBA Finals was headlined by a massive mental error on the part of Cleveland Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith. George Hill missed the second of two free-throw attempts with about 4 seconds left and Smith grabbed the rebound.
The game was tied at this point, 107-107. Smith, though, seemed to think that the Cavs were winning and attempted to dribble out the clock.
After the Cavs lost, Smith was crushed for his mistake and further so when he appeared to lie about the play, saying he knew they were tied.
However, Smith has changed his tune. In a press conference this afternoon, Smith opened up about the play and made it clear he wasn't sure what was going on.
Here's video of the play in question:
Did that play cost the Cavaliers a win? Perhaps. George Hill making his final free throw also could have helped matters.
Game 2 tips off from Oakland on Sunday night at 8:00 p.m. ET.
