The Los Angeles Lakers made a savvy addition to their roster on Friday, signing Markieff Morris. In order to make room on the roster for the veteran forward, the team waived former All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins.

Cousins joined the Lakers this past offseason to help Anthony Davis and LeBron James bring a title back to the prestigious franchise. Unfortunately for the former Kentucky star, he suffered a torn ACL during an offseason workout.

Waiving a player that's already injured might sound like a cruel move, but it turns out Los Angeles wants to keep the 29-year-old center. According to NBA insider Shams Charania, the Lakers plan to keep Cousins around the team.

"DeMarcus Cousins plans to remain with the Lakers for the remainder of the season to continue rehabbing his torn ACL," Charania said. "Sources tell me that Cousins has been ruled out for the season, but the Lakers have really valued his presence around the locker room, the front office and around the ownership level. They've really enjoyed having Cousins around."

This is a nice gesture from the Lakers, as they'll allow Cousins to remain around a championship roster while he recovers from his injury. Los Angeles also has the chance now to add a healthy role player to its rotation. Morris should help bolster a rather lackluster bench for the Lakers. As for Cousins, he'll have the chance to hit the open market this summer. That being said, he might not want to leave Los Angeles. [
