Earlier this offseason, LeBron James went public with his decision to switch back to No. 6 for next season. As for his former number, he planned on gifting No. 23 to his new teammate Anthony Davis.
James wore No. 6 during his days with the Miami Heat, and many fans were excited about him reverting back to that number.
Unfortunately, the NBA won’t see James wearing No. 6 for at least one more year.
Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports is reporting that James will have to wait another season before giving No. 23 to Davis. The former superstar from the Pelicans has worn that number his entire collegiate and professional career.
The reason the jersey change can’t take place this season for the Lakers is because they missed the March 15 deadline. Another issue is that Nike, the manufacture of NBA jerseys, would have taken a huge financial hit from all the wasted No. 23 James jerseys that have already been made.
While this jersey change is currently on hold for now, the plan is to go through with it after the 2019-20 season.

Davis announced that he’ll wear No. 3 next season for Los Angeles.
Regardless of this drama surrounding the team’s jerseys, the Lakers will head into next season as one of the favorites to win the NBA Finals.
It’ll be fun to see how James and Davis mesh together on the hardwood.
