Their path to the gold-medal match wasn’t easy, but the United States managed to overcome a lot of adversity and finish on top of the world at the Tokyo Olympics.
On Saturday morning, Kevin Durant led Team USA to an 87-82 win over France in a highly-anticipated rematch. France won the initial meeting during pool play, but Rudy Gobert and Co. were unable to replicate that performance.
Durant, who has proven time and time again that he can perform well in crunch time, scored 29 points in the gold-medal match. It was an exceptional performance from perhaps the best scorer in the world.
Following the thrilling win over France on Saturday, Team USA received a congratulatory message from Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James.
James kept it simple on Twitter, writing “Congratulations men!”

Team USA deserves a ton of credit for the way it bounced back from its slow start in Tokyo. After Saturday’s win, Durant talked about the team’s growth during this year’s Olympics.
“This is one of those special journeys,” Durant said, via ESPN. “When you’re a part of a team that’s evolving by the second, it’s amazing to see. Each game we continued to grow. I’m grateful we all committed to it, we stuck with it and we finished it off.”
Saturday’s win marked the fourth consecutive Summer Olympics where Team USA captured the gold.
