Thunder Announcer Suspended After Controversial Comment About Russell Westbrook

Earlier this week, Oklahoma City Thunder play-by-play announcer Brian Davis came under fire for using a controversial phrase while discussing Russell Westbrook's play in a game. The announcer used an old southern phrase that many have a problem with.

Westbrook put together another tremendous season in which he averaged a triple-double for the second consecutive season. After an assist in a game earlier this week, Davis said the Thunder's star point guard was "out of his cotton-picking mind."

Unsurprisingly, many people had a problem with a white man using "cotton-picking" to describe a black basketball player.

Davis has now been suspended.

Davis released a statement shortly after the suspension was levied.

"It is with great remorse and humility that I accept this suspension for the insensitive words I used during Wednesday's broadcast. While unintentional, I understand and acknowledge the gravity of the situation. I offer my sincere apology and realize that, while I committed a lapse in judgement, such mistakes come with consequences. This is an appropriate consequence for my actions."
