Why has Joel Embiid not played since 2014?
If you're watching ESPN on this fine Wednesday night, you're probably noticing that Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid looks like he's going to be a solid pro. But as noted by Jeff Van Gundy, Embiid was drafted back in 2014 after starring at Kansas and had yet to see an NBA court until tonight. Why?
Well, it's simple, but unfortunate. Embiid, after being drafted No. 3 overall, broke his right foot ahead of the 2014-2015 season, and then broke that same foot again ahead of the 2015-2016 season. So this is actually the first year he's considered healthy heading into the season.
Embiid has freakish athleticism and showed a lot of promise during his brief stint at Kansas - which is obviously why he was taken so highly by the 76ers back in 2014. But we're going to find out over the next few weeks just how good he can be when he's able to stay on the court.
In Embiid's first few minutes against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday, he hit a jumper and registered both a rebound and a block. Let's hope he keeps it going after all he's gone through.
