Former NBA guard JR Smith shocked the sports world when he enrolled North Carolina A&T State University and joined the golf team as a walk-on. Clearly, that turned out to be a smart move on his part.

On Monday, Smith was named North Carolina A&T's Academic Athlete of the Year. In his first semester at the HBCU, Smith had a 4.0 GPA.

This news isn't that surprising. Back in December, Smith told his followers on Twitter that he achieved his goal of improving his GPA.

As you'd expect, the sports world is so happy for JR Smith.

"An incredible inspiration," Jamaal Bowman tweeted. "Congrats brother!"

"A Champion and an Inspiration," Mike Korzemba wrote. "Congrats to you JR, incredible accomplishment!"

"Of all the stories we have seen over the last sports season, this one might be my favorite," one fan said. "Why? Because this man stayed committed to not just achieving his dream, but excelling at it. Good stuff!"

"JR living his best life and i’m here for it," another fan said.

April is turning out to be a great month for Smith. Last week, Lululemon signed Smith to be its golf ambassador through a name, image and likeness deal.

Congratulations to Smith for having success on the golf course and in the classroom.
