The Los Angeles Lakers made their big splash yesterday before free agency, landing Anthony Davis in a blockbuster trade with the New Orleans Pelicans.
Now, the Lakers can pair AD up with LeBron James, and by managing to keep Kyle Kuzma, they have three-fifths of their starting lineup set. There is still work to be done though.
The Lakers have been linked to a couple of star point guards (Kemba Walker and Kyrie Irving), though they need to change up some things to make the money work. Basically, the Davis trade has to be pushed back to July 30 instead of being finalized on July 6.
If it is pushed through on July 6, the Lakers won’t have the finances to go after another max contract player, someone like Kawhi Leonard.
Wait, what? That’s right, The Ringer’s Kevin O”Connor believes the Lakers are going to at least make a run at the 2019 NBA Finals MVP.
If it were to go through before July 6, the Lakers wouldn’t be able to create the $32.7 million necessary to sign Walker or another max free agent, such as Kawhi Leonard, who league sources say the Lakers will pursue.
It has been long rumored that Leonard is interested in potentially playing in his native California. Recent conventional wisdom says the Clippers could be the team to beat.
Could the Lakers swoop in and steal him from their STAPLES Center cohabitants? It would certainly be noteworthy if they did.
