Tributes Pouring In For NBA Legend Dikembe Mutombo Following His Death
The NBA family reportedly just lost one of its most beloved members.
On Monday, it was announced that Hall of Fame center Dikembe Mutombo succumbed to his battle with brain cancer — passing away at the age of 58.
"Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. "On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in the history of the NBA. Off the floor, he poured his heart and soul into helping others."
"There was nobody more qualified than Dikembe to serve as the NBA's first Global Ambassador. He was a humanitarian at his core. He loved what the game of basketball could do to make a positive impact on communities, especially in his native Democratic Republic of the Congo and across the continent of Africa," Silver added.
"He was always accessible at NBA events over the years — with his infectious smile, deep booming voice and signature finger wag that endeared him to basketball fans of every generation."
Others paid tribute to the four-time Defensive Player of the Year across the internet as well.
"RIP to the great Dikembe Mutombo, one of the greatest shot blockers in NBA history," Dime Magazine posted.
"RIP Dikembe Mutombo — legendary player, philanthropist, and star of the greatest commercial ever," a user said.
"Never forget when Dikembe Mutombo flew 8-year-old Matadi from the Congo to the US and payed for surgery to remove his tumor," another recalled. "RIP Dikembe man, he's who I wanted to be when I played defense…"
"Dikembe Mutombo was one of the greatest shot blockers in NBA history. Throwback to the time he blocked 3 shots on 1 play. RIP to a legend," DraftKings shared.
"Dikembe Mutombo will always be legendary for doing the finger wag after every block," a fan replied.
Mutombo was an eight-time All-Star, six-time first-team All-Defensive member, three-time All-NBA selection and three-time blocks champ. His iconic No. 55 is retired with the Atlanta Hawks and Denver Nuggets.
We'll miss him dearly. May he rest in peace.
