Gregg Popovich has been tasked with trying to lead Team USA men’s basketball to gold this summer. Such a quest should be made easier, thanks to the expected contributions from Wizards star Bradley Beal.
Popovich hasn’t been around Beal too often throughout his coaching career. After all, Popovich coaches in the Western Conference while Beal plays in the East. In leading up to the Tokyo Olympics, the Spurs coach is finally getting an up close look at the Wizards star.
Prior to watching him in Olympic practice, Popovich originally believed Beal was a skinny shooting guard. But his entire perception has changed since Olympic practices began. Popovich now realizes Beal is much “stronger” than he realized. In fact, Popovich even went as far to say he’s “thick.” No, we’re not kidding.
Whether he meant to or not, Popovich’s “thick” comment about Beal is making headlines. It’s a pretty hilarious comment, all things considered.
“He’s stronger than I expected,” Popovich said this week, via NBC Sports. “He’s a strong young man. I always used to think of him as wiry and thin, but I was totally wrong. He’s thick.”

You could argue Bradley Beal had his best ever season this year. He averaged 31.3 points per game to go along with 4.7 rebounds and 4.4 assists in 60 games.
Somehow, Beal is still one of the more underrated NBA stars. He’s an elite scorer capable of taking games over. He’ll be tasked with doing so during the Tokyo Olympics.
This may not be the only time this summer Gregg Popovich is impressed with the Wizards star.
