An Elite College Coach Is Being Mentioned For The Detroit Pistons Job

A general view of an empty Detroit Pistons arena.

The Detroit Pistons have a head coaching opening. The franchise parted ways with Stan Van Gundy on Monday. The veteran coach was serving as both head coach and president of basketball operations for the team. Detroit will be hiring those two roles separately moving forward.

Who is a candidate for the job? That's not exactly clear - yet. However, an elite college coach is being mentioned as a potential one.

Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo has often been mentioned as a potential NBA coach. He's previously been linked to the Cleveland Cavaliers when they had a head coaching opening.

Now, Izzo is being mentioned as a contender to take over his state's NBA team. It does make some sense.

Izzo and the franchise reportedly had some discussions in 2014 prior to the hiring of Van Gundy. The Detroit Free Press outlined if it is a possibility:

Pros: There was some dialogue between the two sides in 2014. Familiar name locally and with a 2000 national title.

Cons: The shine is off at scandal-plagued Michigan State and NCAA results have fallen off in recent years. Sources have downplayed this possibility, but his name will likely surface on the rumor mill.

It would be surprising if Izzo did leave Michigan State for the NBA. However, the timing could be right, and most of the fan base would likely get behind the hire.

Stay tuned.
