When Doc Rivers coaches the Los Angeles Clippers this season, he will not be coaching his son. Austin Rivers was just traded.
The Clippers are shipping Rivers to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Marcin Gortat, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Rivers has spent the the last three-and-a-half seasons in LA playing for his father.
Doc Rivers rescinded his control over the basketball operations of the Clippers in 2017. Still, he had to know his son was getting traded.
Either he agreed to it or was told it was happening regardless of how he felt.
Whatever went down, it might make family time awkward in the near future.
The younger Rivers will likely serve as John Wall's primary backup next season, though he could play off the ball as well. The Wizards have been looking for point guard depth for some time.
Last year, Rivers averaged a career-high 15.2 points, 4.0 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game.
The Clippers finished 42-40 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2011.
