It took him some extra time to do so, but Ben Simmons won the NBA Rookie of the Year.

Simmons, who was picked No. 1 overall in 2016, missed the entire 2016-17 season due to injury. However, his performance this year earned him the top rookie honors.

The NBA announced Simmons' award at the league awards ceremony tonight.

Simmons averaged 15.1 points, 8.2 assists and 8.1 rebounds per game. His main competition for the trophy was Utah Jazz star guard Donovan Mitchell.

If Simmons can improve his shooting--he made zero three-pointers this season--he could become virtually unstoppable. He already has the playmaking ability and can impact the game in other ways.

After what was a lengthy wait, Philadelphia's "process" certainly is paying its dividends when it comes to Simmons and Joel Embiid.

The NBA Awards are still ongoing. There are still some major honors to be announced, including league MVP.
