NFL Releases Statement On This Absurd Clay Matthews Penalty

nfl releases statement on clay matthews penalty

Clay Matthews was called for another extremely controversial roughing the passer penalty late in an NFL game today. The Green Bay Packers' star linebacker is one week removed from his brutal roughing the passer penalty late in the fourth quarter of the game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Today's one was worse. Well, the hit wasn't worse - not even close - but the penalty was.

Nearly every NFL fan on Twitter seems to have reacted to the hit, saying how bad of a penalty call it was.

NFL Football Operations have released a statement on the penalty, revealing the "rule" that Matthews appeared to break. "This is a foul for roughing the passer - the defender lands “with all or most of the defender’s weight” on the passer. Rule 12, Section 2, Article 9(b)," it tweeted. The statement included multiple angles of the hit:

That is extremely questionable, at best.

This was Matthews' third roughing the passer penalty in as many weeks. Packers head coach Mike McCarthy was not happy.

The Redskins, meanwhile, are leading the Packers 28-17 with a couple of minutes remaining. We'll see what Matthews has to say about his latest penalty after the game.
