After an embarrassing loss to Duke in the season opener, the Kentucky Wildcats have found themselves. While head coach John Calipari loves the current progression of his team, he believes one of the keys to success will be finding another player to separate from his core of role players.
Well, it appears the early favorite in this competition is EJ Montgomery. The five-star recruit needs time to develop, but he’s still averaging 8.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.
On Wednesday, the Wildcats had an impressive victory over North Dakota, as they won by 38 points. However, all Calipari could talk about was the importance of giving Montgomery ample minutes.
From The Courier-Journal:
“I got to get him in the game, and I got to let him go and he’s going to make some mistakes and he’s going to get pushed sometimes, but you got to have separators in the game at some point that can make a play out of nothing,” Calipari said. “He does that.”
It’s clear that PJ Washington and Reid Travis are instrumental to Kentucky’s offense. Now, it’ll be on Calipari to find his next key scorer for the Wildcats.
“I need a couple guys to separate, EJ may be that guy.”
Calipari says Montgomery needs more minutes, even if it comes at the expense of others. https://t.co/oy1hEOSfwR

The Wildcats usually take time to find the right mixture of players, but it appears that could happen sooner than later.
With Montgomery emerging into a potential impact player, opponents should beware of the Kentucky Wildcats.
