ESPN Names Most 'Overrated' Team Entering The Season
Who's the most overrated team in college football heading into the season? It might be West Virginia.
WVU returns its star quarterback in Will Grier, who was expected by some to leave early for the NFL. The Mountaineers also bring back their top wide receiver and several other key players.
This could be the year WVU truly contends atop the Big 12. The pundits are expecting it to happen.
ESPN has West Virginia ranked very highly in its preseason top 25 poll. The Mountaineers come in at No. 13 in the latest edition.
"West Virginia looks like Oklahoma's biggest threat in the Big 12 this coming season, with quarterback Will Grier and All-American David Sills V returning for their senior seasons. If Grier stays healthy, the Mountaineers should be among the most explosive offenses in the country.
The question is whether West Virginia's defense will improve. The Mountaineers added No. 21 defensive end Dante Stills, No. 16 safety Kwantel Raines, juco linebacker Charlie Benton and former Ohio State cornerback Josh Norwood to try to shore up that side of the ball," ESPN writes.
ESPN's computer, though, is not nearly as high on West Virginia. It actually thinks that West Virginia might be the country's most "overrated" team.
The FPI has West Virginia ranked No. 36 in the country right now. That's more than 20 spots lower than its preseason top 25 ranking.
