Florida Panthers Wear Jose Fernandez No. 16 Jerseys In Warmups, Donate To Foundation

Ahead of their first game of the season, the Florida Panthers wore Jose Fernandez jerseys during warmups.

The Florida Panthers' season got underway on Thursday night and prior to puck drop, the team took the ice wearing Jose Fernandez No. 16 jerseys in honor of the late Miami Marlins pitcher.

The Panthers also wore special No. 16 helmet decals honoring Fernandez during their game against the New Jersey Devils. Fernandez, 24, was killed in a boating accident in the early morning on Sept. 21. The Panthers also donated $35,000 to the Jose Fernandez Foundation prior to puck drop. Marlins Dee Gordon and Adam Conley were on hand to accept the donation.

According to the Miami Herald, the Panthers donated $25,000 with their players adding an additional $10,000:

“Our guys rallied and really wanted to add their own money to this,” Panthers owner Doug Cifu said. “Jose was a special guy and we have some special guys as well.”

The Panthers lead the Devils 1-0 late in the first period.
