The journalism world is hurting today, as the New York Daily News announced that more than 50 percent of its editorial staff is being laid off as its new parent company, Tronc, has decided to make serious cuts in an attempt to refocus its efforts.

The sports section of the Daily News is one of the areas being hit the hardest by the layoffs. The section is reportedly being cut from 30-plus employees to nine.

Among those cut is prominent NBA writer and frequent Around The Horn panelist Frank Isola, who announced on Twitter that he was part of the layoffs.

"Just a quick update...." he wrote.

The layoffs are being widely criticized and many at ESPN are being outspoken against them. ESPN Around The Horn host Tony Reali was especially critical on Twitter in regards to the decision to let Frank Isola go. "HOW DO YOU EVEN HAVE A NEW YORK DAILY NEWS SPORTS SECTION WITHOUT FRANK ISOLA?!?!" he wrote. "HAS THERE EVER BEEN ANYONE WHO WROTE AND SOUNDED AND CARRIED THEMSELVES MORE LIKE THE CITY ON THEIR MASTHEAD THAN FRANK ISOLA?"

Isola is one of the best in the business and, most likely, he'll have plenty of good opportunities moving forward. But that doesn't make this any easier to swallow.
