Finally, a university that listens to its fans. After Hawaii AD Ben Jay commented back in February that the school would be adopting the team name of "Warriors" for all of its men's sports, there was a great deal of backlash. Today, Jay did something about it, announcing that the school will instead change the name back to the "Rainbow Warriors".
From the school's athletics website:
“The decision on February 13 to change the nickname of the men's teams to Warriors has generated a lot of discussion and we have received both positive and negative feedback,”Ben Jay, UH athletics director, said. “We listened to the public discussion and we went back to the original two questions we asked ourselves - who are we and what is representative of the islands?"
The nickname was originally changed in 2000 for some of the teams - which is confusing. According to CBS Sports, different sports had different names, including "Warriors", "Rainbow Warriors" and "Rainbows". Now, they'll all be united under one. For reference, the women's teams will keep the name "Rainbow Wahine".
