A high school football player in Georgia tragically died days before his graduation. He drowned to death.

Jaylen Lott, an 18-year-old football player for Lowndes High School, died while swimming in Florida. He was one of several people who were reportedly in distress due to bad rip currents.

The athlete was reportedly trying to help others in trouble.

The New York Post has details on what happened:

News outlets report 18-year-old Jaylen Lott was among several swimmers reported in distress at St. Augustine Beach on Sunday. St Johns County Fire Rescue Lt. Lucas Smith says rip currents were a risk at the beach that day.

Two swimmers were rescued and survived, but it took rescuers nearly 90 minutes to find Lott while searching the water and from the air. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead.

The teen was a football player at Lowndes High School in Valdosta and would have graduated May 26.

Our thoughts are with Jaylen's friends and family. May he rest in peace.
