On Tuesday night, UAB and Northern Illinois met in the Boca Raton Bowl. Midway through the second quarter, a UAB defender delivered a brutal hit to a Northern Illinois wide receiver, though it appeared the defender got the worst of the hit.
UAB's D.A. Williams made a tackle, but appeared to do so with the back of his helmet. The hit left Williams motionless on the turf.
The senior defensive back appeared to be knocked out during the play, but regained consciousness and moved his legs while being attended to by medical staff.
Medical personnel immobilized Williams and placed him on a board before carting him off the field.
It was a heartbreaking scene as Williams was carted off the field as both teams took a knee. Hopefully, the medical staff was overcautious and the injury isn't as severe as it seemed.
ESPN, which is broadcasting the game, announced that Williams will be taken to the hospital for further testing.
