When it comes to the wrestling world, the storyline is half the battle…
Over the weekend, John Cena and Nikki Bella shocked the world when they announced they were mutually calling off their engagement. This came just weeks before they were set to walk down the aisle – but it appears there’s more to this story.
The 40-year-old Cena proposed a year ago at Wrestlemania 33. Roughly a year later this Sunday, Bella posted this statement to her Instagram:
“After much contemplation and 6 years of being together, Nikki Bella and John Cena announced today their decision to separate as a couple. While this decision was a difficult one, we continue to have a great deal of love and respect for one another. We ask that you respect our privacy during this time in our lives.”
Here’s the post:
Early Monday morning Cena took to Twitter to share an anecdote about “perseverance” i.e. a little ol’ “whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” which would make one think that Cena wasn’t too happy about the decision to split.
Hardship, loss, and humility are extremely difficult waters to navigate, but perseverance thru them builds a strength to withstand anything life throws your way.

Meanwhile, according to People magazine, a source close to Bella says she is heartbroken over the split and says that Cena “shouldn’t never proposed.”
Here’s more from People.com:
“She never gave him an ultimatum,” says the source. “He talked a really good game about having changed, about having his priorities straight, about knowing what’s important, and that it was her. But as the day got closer, it was like he just went back to who he’s always been — which is someone who puts himself first, always,” the insider says. “He’s an incredibly dedicated, driven, ambitious guy. And for the longest time he said he didn’t think he had room in his life for a spouse or kids. It seems like in the end that was still the truth.”
“But in that case, he never should’ve proposed, let alone in front of millions of people. Now she’s heartbroken. This was supposed to be the happiest time of her life,” the source adds. “He ruined it and blew everything up.”
The couple had been together for six years and their wedding was set to take place in a star-studded affair in Mexico in early May. Here’s to the best for both John and Nikki moving forward.
