Julius Randle, outside of a potential trade for Kawhi Leonard, is the biggest storyline of the rest of the summer for the Lakers. The promising young forward is a restricted free agent. Where does he fit in on the now-LeBron James led franchise?
Yahoo! Sports' NBA insider Shams Charania has provided an update on the situation. Randle is reportedly excited about the possibility of playing alongside LeBron.
Randle and the Lakers have reportedly yet to discuss a contract, but that could be changing today. Los Angeles is reportedly planning on meeting with the former Kentucky standout.
"Lakers restricted free agent Julius Randle hasn’t yet received an offer from L.A., but has excitement for arrival of LeBron James. Randle’s representatives and the Lakers are expected to speak Monday, hopeful of potential offer to retain him," Charania reports.
Randle is likely seeking a big, multi-year deal, but there aren't a ton of NBA teams with cap space this summer. His best option might be to take a sizable one-year contract with the Lakers this summer and then become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
The Ringer's Kevin O'Connor believes this could be a nice option.
"I wonder if Julius Randle would consider taking a one-year deal to become an unrestricted free agent in 2019. Playing alongside LeBron James with his type of developing skill-set could only boost his value ahead of the 2019 offseason, which will have more available money," he tweeted.
Randle is definitely the kind of player who could fit well next to LeBron James. We'll see if him and the Lakers can come to an agreement.
