The pop star is getting crushed for rumors of a special halftime show performance.

TMZ is reporting that Justin Timberlake has something special planned for tonight's Super Bowl halftime show. Timberlake is reportedly planning on paying tribute to Minnesota icon Prince.

Our sources also reveal there are no 'NSYNC or Janet Jackson cameos planned ... so anyone hoping for a reunion or redemption ... you can pretty much abandon all hope.

HOWEVER, we're told Justin does have one pretty cool trick up his sleeve -- a hologram to honor ... wait for it ... Prince, in his hometown.

Of course, plans and strategies can change ... but an overhaul at this point seems unlikely.

A nod to Prince during the halftime show should be expected. Timberlake has long called Prince one of his favorite artists.

However, bringing the deceased Prince out as a hologram is something that would get criticized quite heavily. Prince previously spoke out about the use of holograms in performances, saying he'd never want to see it happen.

It looks like it won't, too. Multiple reports have de-bunked TMZ's report, saying the hologram thing won't happen.

Tonight's game is set to kick off at 6:30 p.m. E.T. The game will be televised on NBC.
