Kawhi Leonard reportedly wanted to be traded to Los Angeles. The former San Antonio Spurs star was open to playing for either the Lakers or the Clippers. Instead, Gregg Popovich and Co. shipped him off to Canada.
The All-NBA forward was traded to the Raptors for a package that included All-Star guard DeMar DeRozan. Neither player seemed to be happy with the trade.
Early reports suggested that Kawhi had no interest in playing in Toronto. He's a free agent in 2019 and everyone was convinced that he'd be leaving for the Lakers or the Clippers.
New reports, however, say different.
A source close to Kawhi Leonard told the San Diego Union-Tribune that he believes the All-Star forward will fall in love with Toronto and will not be leaving in free agency.
Here’s what someone who knows Leonard as well as anybody told me privately: “He’s going to fall in love with Toronto – it’s going to happen. He’s not going to leave, I’m telling you.”
After what the NBA world witnessed this past season, Kawhi staying in Toronto would not be that surprising.
Everyone thought Paul George was going to leave the Thunder for the Lakers in free agency. Instead, he opted to sign a four-year deal to remain in Oklahoma City.
The Raptors have an incredible fan base and a roster that could contend for an NBA Finals spot. They certainly have what it takes to convince Leonard to stay put.
