USC announced today a decision on head football coach Clay Helton. The Trojans' head coach will not be fired.
"It is my firm belief that we have a good team returning next year and a solid foundation in place, and that Clay Helton is a good coach. Let me be clear to everyone, our players, our recruits and our fans. Clay Helton is our head coach and he will continue to be our head coach.
I am a strong advocate of consistency within a program, sticking by a leader, supporting them and helping them and their team improve," USC athletic director Lynn Swann said in a letter to USC's fan base.
The decision to keep Helton is a surprising one to many, but it's a good decision according to Kirk Herbstreit.
The ESPN college football analyst reacted to USC's decision on Twitter.
"Good decision," Herbstreit tweeted. "USC will be back strong next year. Young team. A lot of adversity will make them stronger for experiencing those challenging times."
ESPN college football analyst Adam Rittenberg also agrees with the decision.
"Objectively, Helton deserves another year at USC. He did more in 2016 and 2017 than his predecessors. If he had been fired, it would have been more because of who he was when he got the job versus what he actually did as the Trojans coach," he writes.
There are likely plenty of USC fans who feel differently, of course.
