Major Sports Radio Host Checked Himself Into Hospital With "Suicidal Thoughts"

Kirk Minihane speaks on NESN.

Kirk Minihane, a radio host for WEEI up in Boston, has been off the air for a few days. Thursday, he explained his absence in a heartfelt note on Twitter.

Minihane, who suffers from depression, told his followers that he actually checked himself into a hospital last Thursday because he was having suicidal thoughts. It looks like he was treated and released after a number of days.

Minihane says he plans on returning to work on Friday - and that he's nervous about it. Minihane is one of the hosts of Kirk & Callahan.

He plans on addressing it live on the air. He says he isn't "ashamed or embarrassed" about the situation.

Minihane is one of the more controversial figures in sports radio. But his radio show is also one of the most popular in the country.

Hopefully, Minihane being open and honest about his depression will encourage others to do the same and get the help they need.
