The Lakers Might Not Be The Favorite To Land Kawhi Leonard

Kawhi Leonard wants to be in Los Angeles. The Lakers are the biggest name in town and they now have LeBron James. Everyone assumes that the Lakers are the clear favorite to land the Spurs' All-Star forward.

That might not actually be the case, though. Los Angeles' other NBA team might actually be the preferred destination.

We first heard about this about a week ago, when ESPN NBA insider Stephen A. Smith said that Leonard was not "enamored" with the idea of playing on a LeBron James-led team in Los Angeles. That spotlight might be too bright.

Now, we're hearing from FOX Sports 1's Cris Carter, who is apparently close with Kawhi, that the Clippers could be the preferred landing spot.

FOX Sports 1's Chris Broussard has heard similar things.

"As I’ve said before, it IS NOT Lakers or bust for Kawhi. It’s LA or bust right now (tho as PG showed, that can change). If Kawhi hits free agency in 2019, Clippers will have legit shot at getting him," he reports.

Carter echoed those thoughts.

"This is EXACTLY what I'm hearing. If the the Lakers don't trade for Kawhi now they run a legitimate risk of him going with Jerry West & LAC," he reports.

It still feels like Kawhi Leonard is going to be a Laker. But the Spurs' star heading to the Clippers instead does make sense.

The Lakers will have multiple options next summer. Jimmy Butler and Klay Thompson are a couple of the All-Stars set to hit free agency alongside Kawhi.
