Landon Donovan is arguably the best player in the history of U.S. Soccer, but the former American star is under fire this weekend for a non-United States themed tweet about the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The former American goal scorer took to Twitter on Saturday to post a tweet about the World Cup, telling his fellow United States fans to cheer for Mexico.

Donovan is part of some ad campaigns aimed at United States fans, telling them to root on El Tri - Mexico's national team - since the Americans did not make it this year.

"The tournament is here! USA fans, our team may not be in Russia, but our neighbors to the south are. So join me and their proud #sponsor @WellsFargo to cheer on our other team, Mexico @miseleccionmxEN. ¡Vamos México!" he tweeted.

Donovan has since been called out by multiple members of United States' national team program.

Donovan responded to his critics with the following tweet:

"You grew up in SoCal and owe much of your soccer skill to playing with Mexicans. Your father is of Mexican descent. Look around our country, are you happy with how we are treating Mexicans? Open your mind, stand for something & remember where you came from," he tweeted.

Mexico, meanwhile, is set to begin its 2018 World Cup this morning. The national team is taking on Germany at 11 a.m. E.T. It will be televised on FOX Sports 1.
