Maryville College Football Player Charged With Murder Of His Ex-Girlfriend

A Maryville College football player is facing a first-degree murder charge in the death of his ex-girlfriend.

William Riley Gaul, 18, is charged with killing 16-year-old Emma Jean Walker while she slept in her bedroom Monday morning, per the Knoxville News-Sentinel.

According to a member of the victim's family, the couple had ended their relationship in recent weeks, but Gaul had been unable to move on.

"She had chosen to move on," Jenny Weldon, Walker's aunt, said Wednesday. "He refused to accept it. He chose not to accept her wishes."

Gaul remained in jail today. A freshman at Maryville College, he played in 10 games this season, catching 23 passes for 169 yards. According to the News-Sentinel, a Maryville spokesman confirmed he has been dismissed from the football program.

Making this tragic story even more chilling is the fact Gaul supposedly posted a series of tweets about Walker in the aftermath of her death. One of those tweets was a lengthy tribute.
