The ESPN NFL Draft guru has the Browns going with a surprise at No. 1.
How are you feeling, Browns fans? Your team won't lose a game for several more months, so you can't feel too bad. You probably will after reading this, though.
ESPN NFL Draft guru Mel Kiper has released a new 2018 mock draft. Browns fans aren't going to like it.
Kiper has Cleveland going with a quarterback with the top overall pick. But it's not the quarterback you'd think. It's probably not the quarterback you'd think of after the first quarterback that comes to mind, either.
The NFL Draft specialist has Cleveland going with Josh Allen, the Wyoming quarterback, at No. 1. It's a controversial prediction.
"My evaluations on this quarterback class are really close. I've gone back and forth a few times on Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold and Allen, but I just moved Allen up to my No. 1 quarterback," Kiper says.
Kiper knows that Allen's numbers aren't impressive. The 6-foot-5, 233-pound quarterback threw for just 1,812 yards and completed only 56.3 percent of his passes this season.
It's all about future potential, though. And Kiper believes Allen has it.
"His numbers aren't impressive, I know. But the NFL is all about projection, and he has a high ceiling. Coaches want to work with the 6-foot-5 Allen because he has all of the tools. I said last month that he is one of my favorite prospects in this class. The other top quarterbacks have warts, and there is no slam-dunk No. 1 prospect, which makes it a fun class," Kiper says.
USC's Sam Darnold and UCLA's Josh Rosen are probably in contention for the No. 1 overall pick, too, assuming Cleveland wants to go with a quarterback. Baker Mayfield is probably a first-round pick, also, but not at No. 1.
The 2018 NFL Draft will take place from April 26 to 28. It'll be held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
