The Astros and the Red Sox are only in the first inning of tonight’s American League Championship Series Game 4, but we already have a major controversy.
Houston star Jose Altuve hit a deep shot to right field in the bottom of the first inning. Boston’s Mookie Betts attempted to rob what looked like a home run, but he made some contact with a couple of Astros fans.
Here’s the play:

And here’s another angle:
That would have been an INSANE catch from Mookie Betts. pic.twitter.com/3EdbzyBJb2

Did those Astros fans prevent Betts from making a catch? Maybe.
Did those Astros fans reach over the wall and interfere with the play? Again, that’s a maybe, but there didn’t appear to be any definitive replay angle that showed it.
Still, the MLB’s umpires determined that there was in fact fan interference. The umpires called Altuve out.
He was furious.
Everyone else is pretty confused, too.
“I’d love to hear the explanation for that. Didn’t look like a fan reached over the fence. If he didn’t, and the ball was over the fence when it was touched, and the contact was incidental between the fan and Mookie Betts’ glove, that has to be a home run, right?” tweeted Jeff Passan.

“That doesn’t make any sense. I need a clear pic of the fans reaching over to interfere with Mookie,” tweeted Ryen Russillo.

It was a great attempt of a catch by Betts, but it seems like a confusing ruling by the umpires.
Regardless, the Red Sox are taking a 2-0 lead into the second inning. The game is on TBS.
