MWC Commissioner Optimistic About Eight-Team Playoff

Will the four-team playoff be around long?

While a four-team playoff in college playoff is enough to make most fans content, the Mountain West Conference Commissioner Craig Thompson doesn't believe it will be around for long. In an interview with ESPN on Tuesday, Thompson had some interesting thoughts on the playoff.

"I know we're saying four teams for 12 years, but I don't see it as a four-team playoff for 12 years. I just don't see it. If there is success with four, I think we will go to what is most ideal, which is eight. That would double the access points. History has shown that TCU twice and perhaps Utah would have made it into those four. Those teams just needed the opportunity to show they could compete with anybody." ~ Craig Thompson

Thompson is voicing the same concerns that many non-power conference teams have with the new playoff. It was hard enough for those teams to qualify for BCS bowls in the first place, and they are now more likely to be kept out of the four-team playoff in favor of traditional powers, especially when you consider the growing importance of strength of schedule.
