Josh Gordon's departure from the Cleveland Browns before the start of training camp was an abrupt one. At the time of the star wide receiver's departure, few details were given.

We still don't know much about Gordon's absence from the team. Few updates from the Browns regarding his status have been given.

Today, we learned a little bit more.

WKYC in Cleveland is reporting that Gordon's departure from the Browns came in the middle of a "heated and protracted child custody dispute."

From the report:

Browns receiver Josh Gordon was in the midst of a heated and protracted child custody dispute in the days leading up to his abrupt departure from the team, court records obtained by WKYC.com show.

Those same court records allege an attorney representing the child’s mother threatened “to air sensitive information to the public in an effort to embarrass [Gordon],” who has been embroiled in the support dispute since 2015.

Court records also show Gordon earned so little money during his NFL suspension that he did not file income tax returns in 2015 and 2016.

However, court records show he expects to resume collecting his $800,000 salary and return to the Browns for their first game on Sept. 9.

Browns head coach Hue Jackson said that Gordon was dealing with some things and would be back when it was best for him.

Cleveland is one game into its preseason. The Browns are set to take on the Bills on Friday night.
