The New England Patriots could be without their top wide receiver when they begin their 2018 NFL season. Julian Edeleman is reportedly facing a multi-game suspension.

ESPN NFL insiders Adam Schefter and Field Yates are reporting that Edelman is being suspended four games by the league for a violation of the NFL's enhancing substances policy.

The suspension is reportedly being appealed.

"Patriots WR Julian Edelman is facing a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance enhancing substances policy, league sources tell Field Yates and me. Suspension is under appeal," Schefter tweeted.

Edelman missed the 2017 season with a knee injury. He tore his ACL in the preseason and was not able to make it back.

The Patriots' star wideout was expected to be ready to go by the start of the 2018 season.

Edelman told reporters earlier this week that he was feeling confident with his knee and was not planning on wearing a brace.

“Your confidence is built through your preparation, your fundamentals,” Edelman said. “We’ve been working really hard at those things. It’s one of those things where each step you take, you’re prepared for that step.”

The Patriots start the 2018 season on Sept. 9 against the Texans. Their next three games are at Jacksonville, at Detroit and at home against Miami.
