On Thursday night, the New England Patriots faced off against the New York Giants in the preseason finale. Most of the key starters didn't see the field, but veteran wide receiver Julian Edelman did.

Edelman has been out of action the last few weeks while recovering from a broken thumb. Bill Belichick and company wanted to get him some game action before the regular season kicks off next week, but it may not have been a good idea.

After hauling in a pass against the New York Giants last night, he came up favoring his left hand a bit.

Here's a look at the play and the hit on Edelman.

After the play, Edelman went to the sideline and had his left hand and thumb looked at by trainers. The star wide receiver suffered a significant injury to that thumb earlier in training camp. However, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport has good news for Patriots fans. Edelman escaped the incident without re-injuring his thumb or suffering any other injury to his hand.

Without Rob Gronkowski on the field this season, Edelman is expected to be "the guy" for quarterback Tom Brady.

Patriots fans can breath easy knowing Edelman will be on the field for the regular season.
