Notre Dame's defensive back depth took a hit today. A former four-star recruit has decided to transfer out of the program.

Nick Watkins, a top recruit coming out of high school in 2014, announced this afternoon that he will be pursuing other options. He's decided to transfer.

The former Fighting Irish starter will be a graduate transfer. He can play right away for another school in 2018.

It's unclear at this point where Watkins will consider transferring to. He made his announcement on Twitter.

"It's been real Irish Nation," he wrote.

Watkins is a former starting cornerback for Notre Dame. He'll now seek more playing time elsewhere.

The 6-foot cornerback is a Texas native. He chose the Fighting Irish over Alabama, among other programs, coming out of high school.

Watkins was ranked the No. 17 cornerback in the class by 247Sports' Composite Rankings. He was the No. 182 overall prospect.
