Notre Dame's basketball program has taken a roster hit this morning.

The Fighting Irish have announced that forward Elijah Burns will be transferring out of the program.

Burns, a former three-star recruit, was averaging 5.3 points and 3.8 rebounds a game this season. He had been averaging 11.3 minutes a game.

Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey issued the following statement:

“We fully support Elijah in his decision to move on from the University of Notre Dame following his graduation in December. We will provide any assistance he may need as he takes the next step in his academic and playing careers. It is always tough when one of our guys doesn’t end his career here, but we are proud that he will achieve the ultimate goal of any student-athlete that comes through our program — to leave Notre Dame with a degree from one of the top institutions in the country.”

Burns could potentially graduate from Notre Dame and play immediately somewhere else in 2019-20.

It's unclear at this point what type of school he's interested in transferring to.
