LeBron James’ first game with the Los Angeles Lakers will be tomorrow night. He and his teammates will face the Portland Trail Blazers.
While many are expecting James to elevate the Lakers into a playoff team, they aren’t expected to contend for a title–yet. The consensus seems to be that LeBron needs at least one more star around him, either via trade or free agency or if one of the Lakers’ young players makes a huge leap.
According to The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor, LeBron has his eye on one star guard in particular. He is interested in joining up with Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard.
However, while O’Connor says LeBron is a fan of Lillard, he did caution that it seems to be an unlikely that they would wind up together.
“LeBron wants to play with Damian Lillard. He’s one of the guys he’d like to play with and that’s chatter around the league. It has been since before LeBron signed with the Lakers, it was one of the many indicators that he was heading there.”

“I just don’t see, even in a theoretical world where it was an offer like that, I don’t see Portland dealing in the Western Conference.”
Lillard has two years left on his deal after this season. He is also set to make nearly $28 million a year, which could make a trade tough to facilitate.
For now, James will have to deal with playing against Lillard tomorrow night. The game will tip off at 10:30 p.m. ET on TNT.
