Report: Thad Matta Is A "Serious" Candidate For This Major Job

ESPN's Jay Williams reported that Rick Pitino is being mentioned "a lot" for the Georgia men's basketball vacancy. The former Louisville coach reportedly isn't the only big name in contention.

Former Ohio State head coach Thad Matta was mentioned by some as a candidate for the Ole Miss gig. He was reportedly in Oxford, Miss. to discuss the vacancy.

Matta and Ole Miss didn't happen, but another SEC job might scoop him up.

CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein is reporting that Matta is a "serious" candidate for the Georgia job.

"Discussions between both sides could begin as early as today."

ESPN’s Jeff Goodman reported last week that Matta is indeed interested in a return to coaching.

From ESPN:

When he parted with the Buckeyes, Matta mentioned “trying to get healthy” as a reason. He battled health issues for much of his time in Columbus, including emergency back surgery in 2007.

According to one source close to Matta, he currently is in much better shape physically and is rejuvenated after dealing with back and foot issues.

“He wouldn’t take any job,” the source said. “But he’d possibly consider coming back for the right one.”

Stay tuned.
