The first round of the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock in Southampton, New York is underway. The course is playing extremely, extremely tough.
We had one golfer this morning yell “this is clown golf!” That sentiment is likely shared by many of the other competitors on the course.
Rory McIlory, the 2011 U.S. Open champion, just finished his round. It was not a good one.
The four-time major champion shot an 80. It’s his worst one-round score at a major golf tournament.
The two players playing with him – Phil Mickelson and Jordan Spieth – didn’t do much better.
The group as a whole shot a combined 25-over par.
Brutal numbers for the U.S. Open's marquee morning group: Phil Mickelson 77, Jordan Spieth 78, Rory McIlroy 80. Yikes!!
