Here's why Sammy Sosa's skin has been getting whiter.

Sammy Sosa made headlines on Sunday for his appearance. A picture of the former MLB slugger and his wife went viral.

The former Chicago Cubs star and his wife, Sonia, were celebrating some type of party. They were dressed up as cowboys.

That's not really why the picture went viral, though. No, it went viral because of Sosa's appearance.

Sosa, a Dominican Republic native, continues to look whiter in appearance. His skin color has lightened significantly since his playing days.

How has this happened? He explained back in 2009 that he used a bleaching cream for his skin. It seems like he's still doing it.

“It’s a bleaching cream that I apply before going to bed and whitens my skin tone,” Sosa said during an appearance on Univision’s Primer Impacto show in 2009. “It’s a cream that I have, that I use to soften [my skin], but has bleached me some. I’m not a racist, I live my life happily.”

“What happened was that I had been using the cream for a long time and that, combined with the bright TV lights, made my face look whiter than it really is. I don’t think I look like Michael Jackson,” he added.

Photos show what Sosa looked like during his playing days and what he looks like now. It's pretty striking.
