Last month, Clemson linebacker Shaq Smith entered his name into the transfer portal – despite the fact that he was projected to be a starter this coming season. It looks like he’s chosen a destination.
Smith, according to 247 Sports, is heading to Maryland for his final season of eligibility. He’s reportedly already on campus and “working hard” for his new team.
IMS reported that Smith’s arrival transfer to Maryland appeared to be a foregone conclusion. Smith, who has publicly been in limbo for more than three weeks, is already in College Park working out with the team according to redshirt sophomore linebacker Ayinde Eley. He mentioned Smith’s presence on campus during the Hear The Turtle podcast Thursday afternoon. Maryland began its summer workouts earlier this week.
Smith reportedly has a close relationship with one of the team’s coaches – Cory Robinson – from his high school days.
More #Terps news today: former Clemson linebacker Shaq Smith appears to have joined the team. Former four-star from Baltimore likely would've started for the defending national champs. Smith, during Clemson’s national title run a season ago, finished with 16 tackles and one sack. He was expected to be an important part of the Tigers’ defense heading into the 2019 season.
