One of the brightest stars in tennis reached the top of the mountain on Saturday. Sofia Kenin, a 21-year-old tennis player, defeated Garbine Muguruza in the Australian Open final.
Kenin had an incredible road to reach the final. Her run included victories over Martina Trevisan, Ann Li, Zhang Shuai, Coco Gauff, Ons Jabeur and the top-ranked player in Ashleigh Barty.
Even though Kenin’s opponent had more experience playing in Grand Slam finals, the 21-year-old phenom never blinked. Despite losing the first set of the match, she rallied to win the following two sets.
Considering that Kenin entered the Australian Open as the No. 14 seed in the world, it’s fair to say she’ll likely see that ranking move inside the top 10.
Kenin became the the youngest American woman to win a major since Serena Williams back in 2002. She’s also the youngest women’s champion at the Australian Open since Maria Sharapova.

Winning the Australian Open should help Kenin’s reputation moving forward. It’ll also likely mean she’ll represent the U.S. in the Tokyo Olympics.
It’ll be interesting to see if this is the start of a prolific career for Kenin.
