Dustin Johnson looked like he was on his way to a second U.S. Open championship for much of the weekend, but the powerful golfer ended up falling a couple of strokes back. He finished in third place.
For a moment, though, Johnson appeared to be victorious. That's what his significant other thought, anyway.
According to NJ.com, Johnson's fiancee, Paulina Gretzky, acted like Johnson won the tournament after his final putt on No. 18.
As Johnson approached his 13-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole at Shinnecock Hills on Sunday, Gretzky and two other women ducked under the ropes for a close-up view.
They stood while Bob Koepka sat, anxiously swallowing his nerves in the knee-high fescue.
The three women were less careful with their excitement. When Johnson's putt toppled into the hole, the trio erupted in euphorics - hugging, screaming, arms flailing.
Welp. Premature celebration seems to be in these days. Gretzky apparently took a note out of J.R. Smith's playbook.
Johnson has two more chances this year to win his second major tournament. He'll be a favorite at both the British Open and the PGA Championship.
