A Surprise Team Is Involved In Manny Machado Trade Discussions

We're a little more than two weeks away from the MLB trade deadline. The top prize on the market is Manny Machado.

The Baltimore Orioles shortstop is a free agent at the end of the year, so he very well could be a rental for whichever team deals for him. Still, his immense talent makes him a worthwhile trade acquisition for a contender.

The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers have been the biggest names linked to Machado. The Philadelphia Phillies are also in the mix, and could reportedly try to land Orioles reliever Zach Britton as well.

However, a somewhat surprising team is still involved in discussions for Machado: the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Brewers were unexpected playoff contenders last season before ultimately falling short. Currently, they are 0.5 games back of the first-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal has some details on Milwaukee's interest in Machado.

Franchises like the Brewers rarely can afford to sign marquee free agents, so that occasionally makes them more likely to "go for it" when they have a chance to contend. That could lead to them overpaying for a rental.

Would Machado be Milwaukee's position player version of CC Sabathia in 2008, who they picked up at the deadline even though they knew they would lose him in the offseason?

Stay tuned.
