Texas Tech officially has a new football coach. The Red Raiders have hired Utah State's Matt Wells.

Texas Tech officially announced the news moments ago. Wells takes over for Kliff Kingsbury, who was dismissed following a 5-7 season.

A former Utah State quarterback, Wells had been the head coach at his alma mater since 2013. He compiled a 44-34 record in Logan.

This season, the Aggies finished with a 10-2 record and are headed to a bowl game for the fifth time in the last six seasons.

Under Wells, Utah State's offense took off this season. The Aggies rank third in the nation in scoring offense (47.2 ppg), behind only Alabama and Oklahoma.

Utah State also ranks 11th in total offense and 20th nationally in passing offense.

Details on Wells' contract are not available as of now, but we'll update you when they are released.
