Week 7 of the college football season is on the horizon. Over the next three weeks, we’ll see conference races take shape and the College Football Playoff picture become clearer before November.
Both major polls have been updated after last weekend’s game, so it’s time for our weekly feature examining which teams are ‘overrated’ in the Coaches’ Poll. This list changes over time, so fan bases shouldn’t get too mad if their favorite team is on it.
Here are the three “most overrated” teams in the newest Coaches Poll.
Note, we listed the three teams in the order they were ranked in the poll, not necessarily by which we think is most overrated:
No. 12 Auburn
Florida made last week’s “overrated” list but forced us to eat crow when they took care of Auburn at home. The Tigers dropped just out of the top 10 in the Coaches Poll as a result. Overall, there’s no shame in losing a game at The Swamp, but Saturday exposed Auburn somewhat. If the Tigers can’t get something more out of freshman quarterback Bo Nix, it is going to be a long finish to the season. Gus Malzahn’s team still has to play LSU, Georgia and Alabama.
No. 17 Wake Forest
The Demon Deacons made our list last week, and then they moved up three spots without playing a game. Again, this might be your second-best team in the ACC this year, but the overall resume isn’t great for a 5-0 squad. A 7-1 or 8-0 start (which is doable, by the way) would change our minds on Wake, but until then, the Deacons should be rated a few slots lower.
No. 21 Texas A&M
The Aggies have been on this list consistently, but we swear we aren’t picking on them. It’s just that while there is talent on this roster, this team is living off its good losses right now. Barring a major upset of Alabama, Texas A&M is going to come out of this weekend with a 3-3 record. Their losses will be to ‘Bama, Auburn and Clemson, but their three wins are against Lamar, Texas State and Arkansas. If you’re going to have the Aggies ranked right now, they should be three or four spots lower.
