The latest athlete to "secure the bag" by being handsomely compensated with a new contract is Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley. Gurley agreed to a new deal today.
Gurley signed a four-year contract, worth up to $60 million total. His deal is worth $45 million guaranteed.
It is crucial for any football player to land a sizable contract while they can, given how dangerous and fleeting careers can be. It is even more imperative for a running back to do it, considering the pounding they take.
Therefore, it is no wonder that Gurley is so excited about his newfound earnings. He posted a celebratory Instagram pic shortly after news broke.
It shows him popping bottles outside, though the picture is likely an old one.
Gurley was the No. 10 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. After a standout rookie season, he took a slight step back in 2016.
However, Gurley exploded last fall, rushing for 1,305 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also added 64 receptions for 788 yards and six scores.
Those numbers are quite worthy of the type of reward the Rams gave him today.
