Just when you thought you’ve seen it all in the world of sports, the Eugene Emeralds go out and win their minor-league championship in the most improbably way.
The Emeralds are the Chicago Cubs’ Single-A affiliate team, and they were widely mocked for having the worst record in the Northwest League. However, the questionable postseason qualifications allowed them to squeeze into the playoffs.
Seemingly out of nowhere, they wiggled their way into the championship, where they faced the Spokane Indians. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Emeralds won in ridiculous fashion.
Emmanuel Clase, closer for the Indians, botched his delivery on the mound, resulting in a walk-off balk. As soon as he slipped, the Emeralds went into celebration mode.

Talk about an insane finish.
Everyone loves a great Cinderella story, and it’s safe to say that the Eugene Emeralds fit in that department.
